The modern era of Chiropractic began in 1895 (the same year that X-Rays were discovered) when a Canadian named Daniel D. Palmer was living in Davenport Iowa U.S.A. and helped a man with neck and hearing problems of some 17 years’ duration.
Chiropractic is a fully registered health profession throughout Australia and as such, is part of most health insurance companies’ rebate systems as well as some limited access through Medicare.
The improved hearing and more pain free neck movements occurred from D.D.Palmer’s adjustment of Mr.Lillard’s spine. This encouraged both D.D. Palmer and his son B.J.Palmer to study, research, practice and establish this new era of spinal/nerve therapy. Chiropractic is now one of the world’s largest and most recognized drug-free healing professions.
There is a difference between having optimal health versus feeling no particular pain. A familiar quote is “the absence of pain does not necessarily mean the presence of health”. Expanding on that phrase, we all know how silent some disease processes can be until the symptoms emerge in the late stages of the problem. Cancer, for example, has often been termed “the silent killer”. Another example might be how your dentist explains how a cavity in your tooth could be painless for months or years before that nerve root becomes rather excited.
No, this isn’t a test! In most cases your body knows best, at times it needs some help. It does not appreciate nervous system interference, damage, pressure or blockage. Your spine may not be functioning at its optimum which, in turn, may affect your spinal nerves. Your chiropractor is very concerned and interested in determining whether or not your spine is functioning at its best. Every spine is trying to work within its own limitations. Maximising your spinal abilities to move as well as possible is a reasonable goal for us all to aim towards.
Your health depends to a large extent on just how happily your spine is working. Take care of it! Chiropractic care works with you towards that goal.
Restricted spinal joint movement may be adversely affecting your health by affecting that “super highway” of nerves coming from your brain down through your spinal column and onwards towards your arms, legs, muscles and organs.
Research is ongoing and reflects this working hypothesis.
Here at the NBCC we prefer the term adjustment to more accurately describe the gentle unlocking of a restricted spinal region. Other words used like “manipulation” tend to have a negative connotation like “I felt like I was manipulated into saying or doing that!” which infers a process that goes against what we want or deserve. So please use that more positive user friendly term “adjustment” when discussing chiropractic techniques. Another good and frequently used term is “spinal correction”.
We are here to adjust your spine in a safe, gentle and specific manner that suits your specific body type, condition, tone and sensitivity. Please give us feedback regularly as we work together to maximise your results.
Adjustments aim to help your spine and nervous system function to the best of its ability. Medicine tends to try and treat symptoms and cure diseases which is also very important. Chiropractic and medicine should be complementary and should work together for the ultimate goal of patient health and happiness.
The NBCC is always happy to refer to other health disciplines when deemed necessary and also accepts referrals from various doctors and health professionals.

Usually not and in fact it can often be a very pleasant sensation. The care plan will be suited to the uniqueness of your particular spine and health situation.
When your Chiropractor performs a specific spinal adjustment tiny pockets of gas are released from the joints which makes a clicking noise.
Quite the contrary, our joints need to be periodically unlocked or adjusted in order to maintain proper mobility, disc hydration and synovial fluid production. This maintains a healthier joint and there is less likelihood of future arthritis and nerve irritation.
